A Train Slowly Passing

—∞—

“Since 1941”
Proclaims the logo
On the paper cup
Torké Coffee Roasting Company

I sip the coffee
A train lumbering by
Filled with grain
A mournful early-morning whistle
Announced earlier

1941: my natal year
But now
A train slowly passing
Evokes a childhood memory
My maternal grandfather
A locomotive engineer

Time collapses
Looking out the window
Many years
Overflowing with joyful memories
Hopes
Dreams

Others (few, but too many)
Tinged with sadness
Disappointments
Confusion
Anxiety
Loneliness

What brings
This reflection
This day
In front of this window?
A convergence – “Since 1941” and …
A train slowly passing

I read this slowly, line by line, and I am glad for your overflowing joyful memories, the sadness, unfortunately, comes as part of the deal, and yet, you have expressed it with evocative, soulful writing. The title is perfect, it is a most beautiful poem. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you, Teri. I’m not sure we’d recognize the good times without life’s unexpected trials. The center of gravity of my blessings are way toward the good and hopeful. But, oh the weight of some times of adversity when they come roaring back in the dark hours.

Tom, thanks for the follow on my new blog Michele Marie. I felt a little pigeonholed, on Zellie M. Quinn- my old blog you followed;) I’ll be working from here for now but will keep Zellie blog open to help start and promote this new blog, and so that you can get your poem you wanted… 🙂
